A new survey by the Central Bank, released this Wednesday (4), points to a significant change in Brazilians’ payment habits. Four years after its launch, Pix has established itself as the most used payment method in the country, surpassing cash.
The survey, entitled “Brazilians and their relationship with money”, shows that Pix is used by 76.4% of the population, being the most frequent for 46% of respondents.
This data represents an impressive advance compared to the last edition of the survey, carried out in 2021. At that time, Pix was a novelty, used by 46% of the population and considered the most frequent payment method by just 17%.
Money, which led the ranking in 2021 with 83.6% usage and 42% frequency, fell to 68.9% and 22%, respectively, in the new survey.
The credit card also stood out. Among cashiers at commercial establishments, 42% identified cards as the method most used by customers. In general, debit and credit cards remain popular alternatives, but are unable to reach Pix’s wide adoption.
Despite the advancement of Pix, cash remains present in the daily lives of many Brazilians. It is used by 67.6% of women and 70.5% of men, especially among those with lower incomes.
Among people who earn up to two minimum wages, 75% still use banknotes and coins. This number decreases to 58.3% among those who earn more than ten minimum wages.
The survey also highlighted a more intense use of physical money among the elderly. Around 72.7% of people over 60 use banknotes, while among young people aged 16 to 24, the percentage drops to 68.6%.
The Central Bank reported that the study, carried out with two thousand people between May and July this year, aims to improve the management of the currency and dissemination actions about the Real.
