Police Arrest High School Students Who Cheated on Exams Using AI

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) to replace human-made work is still controversial, amidst the increasing popularity of several platforms, one of which is ChatGPT.

In South Carolina, United States, a college professor caught his students using the ChatGPT bot to write essay assignments for his philosophy class.

Reported New York Postit all started in early December 2022, Darren Hick gave homework to the students in his class, in the form of writing a 500 word essay about the 18th century philosopher David Hume and the paradox of horror.

The assistant philosophy professor at Furman University found an essay that showed several signs of the use of AI in the student's work.

“It's a clean style. But it's recognizable. I would say it writes like a really smart 12th grader,” Hick said of ChatGPT's written answers to questions.

Hick said there were certain odd words used that weren't wrong, but felt strange.

“If you're teaching someone how to write an essay, this is your way of telling them how to write it, before they've found their own style,” says Hick.

Hick does have a background in copyright law ethics. But he said it would be almost impossible to prove that his student's paper was created by ChatGPT.

The professor also entered the perpetrator's text into software created by AI manufacturer ChatGPT, to determine whether the written answer was made by artificial intelligence.
