President of El Salvador Asks to Investigate Football Riots Completely
– The President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, promised to carry out an in-depth investigation into the football riot that occurred at the Cuscatlan Stadium, El Salvador, Saturday (18/2/2023).
At least 12 people died in the incident that occurred during the second leg of the Primera Division play-off quarter-final between Alianza and FAS at the Cuscatlan Stadium.
“Everyone will be investigated starting from the teams, directors, stadiums, ticket offices, leagues, federations and many others. Whoever did it, they will not go unpunished,” said Bukele.
The police stopped the fight and initial reports said nine people died (7 men, 2 women). This has not been added to the dozens of spectators who were injured.
The local police together with the prosecutor’s office have also emphasized that they will hold accountable the parties responsible for the tragedy.
“We regret that this incident resulted in the death. As a police force we announce that together with @FGR_SV we will be conducting a criminal investigation into tonight’s incident,” said National Civil Police Commissioner General Mauricio Arriaza Chicas.
Attorney General Rodolfo Delgado said: “What happened today at the Cuscatlan Stadium is a tragedy for everyone. My condolences go to the Salvadoran fans. We and the police are carrying out the necessary procedures to conclude responsibility.”
As a result of this tragedy, the El Salvador Football Federation will postpone all national football matches on Sunday.
