Todaysgist.com, Jakarta – Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov was arrested by French authorities at an airport outside Paris, according to CNN affiliate BFMTV.

“Officers from the French anti-fraud office, which is under French customs, detained him on Saturday (8/24/2024) evening after he arrived at Bourget Airport on a flight from Azerbaijan,” BFMTV reported, quoted from CNN, Sunday (8/25/2024).

The 39-year-old is reportedly wanted on a French arrest warrant for a lack of moderation on Telegram that led to it being used for money laundering, drug trafficking and sharing paedophile content.

He spent most of his childhood in Turin, Italy, where his father worked. Durov graduated from the Philology Department of Saint Petersburg State University in 2006 with a first-class degree.

His father, Valery Semenovich Durov, is a Doctor of Philology and a renowned academician. Durov has Ukrainian blood from his mother.

Before creating Telegram, Durov founded VKontakte (VK) with Ilya Perekopsky in 2006, inspired by Facebook.
