Last Friday (10) marked a day of large sales of Bitcoin (BTC) by governments. After the United States, it was the turn of Russian authorities to sell BTC resulting from seizures in attacks. In the case of the Russians, the intention is sell the equivalent of US$10 million in BTC.

According to authorities, these BTC were seized during investigations about an international cybercrime gang that operated between October 2010 and February 2018. In total, the Russian government seized just over 1,000 BTCwhich correspond to around US$100 million

In other words, the first sale would correspond to 10% of the entire amount seized from the hands of criminals. But the Russians stated that they also intend to sell other goods that were in the gang’s possession.

The group of hackers to whom the seized Bitcoins belonged is called Infraud and has a previous reputation in Russia. They became known for carrying out credit card scams, but soon adapted to steal cryptocurrencies.

Confiscation and plot twist

During its eight years of operation, the group achieved steal the equivalent of 5,212 BTC, around $489 million. With the dismantling of the gang in 2018, all BTC fell into the hands of Russian authorities. However, some of these coins were almost embezzled by an agent.

Major Marat Tambiev, who is part of the investigation, allegedly had a meeting with a lawyer who represented several members of Infraud. In exchange for not confiscating half of the BTC seizedTambiev demanded that the group hand over more than 2,500 BTC to him.

Furthermore, the major guaranteed that he would spare criminals from criminal detention in favor of house arrest. According to reports, Tambiev received 1,032 BTC on April 7, 2022but was later arrested. His assistant, Kristina Lyakhovenko, was also in on the scheme and was arrested along with Tambiev.

After his arrest, authorities accused Tambiev of accepting bribes and he received a 16-year sentence in a maximum security prison. The now former investigator also had to pay a fine of more than US$5 million.

In turn, Lyakhovenko was jailed for nine years after being found guilty of falsifying evidence.

In 2023, police found the private keys to the Bitcoins in Tambiev’s possession. The passwords were stored on the officer’s computera practice that the vast majority of cryptocurrency users do not recommend.
