Russia has taken an important step in combating illegal cryptocurrency mining by implementing innovative technology based on artificial intelligence (AI).
Developed by academics at Saint Petersburg State University, the tool seeks to identify clandestine activities that overload the electrical system and cause significant economic losses.
This technology is the result of a collaboration between the university and two private companies: Lartech, specialized in Internet of Things (IoT) and energy management, and Energomera, a manufacturer of electricity meters.
The tool uses smart meters integrated with AI to record and analyze energy consumption data. By analyzing the power and frequency of electrical signals, the system identifies abnormal behavior patterns and alerts energy suppliers to possible illegal activities.
Russia against illegal crypto mining
Illegal cryptocurrency mining has become a growing problem in Russia, especially in regions where electricity is cheaper.
According to researchers, these clandestine operations generate overloads that can lead to supply interruptions and significant losses for energy companies.
Furthermore, there are negative social impacts, as MP Boris Gladkikh pointed out, which recently asked the government for stricter measures against the misuse of subsidized fares.
As part of the response, the Russian government announced a ban on crypto mining in several regionsincluding areas of Siberia and occupied territories of Ukraine.
The measure aims to ensure that energy is directed to heating homes during the harsh local winter.
This is not the first time that artificial intelligence has been used to combat illegal mining. In Paraguay, for example, the technology was used by the National Electricity Administration (ANDE) to identify and deactivate clandestine Bitcoin farms.
