Russian director of Yandex resigns – Arkady Volozh has stepped down as director of Russian internet giant Yandex. The European Union has put Volozh on a sanctions list, which has, among other things, frozen his financial resources.

Volozh co-founded Yandex in 1997, which can be seen as the Russian Google. He recently became CEO of the internet company, when his predecessor Tigran Khudaverdyan stepped down. Khudaverdyan was also on the European sanctions list.

According to the EU, Volozh was placed on the list because Yandex “promoted state media and its narrative in search results”. The company is also said to have deleted reports of Russian aggression against Ukraine.

Volozh calls the imposed scantiest “misplaced and ultimately counterproductive,” he writes in a statement. He not only steps down as director, but also resigns from the board of the company.

Yandex itself is not the target of European penalties. The company says its day-to-day operations will not suffer from Volozh’s departure.
