The cryptocurrency market in 2024 was marked by major upheavals, with alternative assets (altcoins) surpassing Bitcoin in terms of appreciation throughout the year. Even so, the largest cryptocurrency on the market is delivering a 117% appreciation in 2024.
While the world’s largest cryptocurrency recorded solid gains driven by factors such as the approval of spot ETFs and growing institutional adoption, other tokens achieved even more impressive returns.
Narratives such as memecoins, exchange tokens, layers 1, and DePIN assets were some of the projects to record percentage gains that far exceeded BTC’s performance. Check out the list of the five cryptocurrencies that appreciated the most this year (YTD):
Four of these five cryptocurrencies also renewed their all-time highs in 2024. PEPE reached the mark of $0.00002803 on December 9th, the WIF registered $4.83 on March 31, the BGB reached $8.45 on December 27th and the Sui recorded the maximum price of $4.91 on December 16th.
Cryptocurrencies that appreciated the most in 2024
It is important to note that none of these cryptocurrencies are part of the Top 10 (10 largest cryptocurrencies by market value). The largest of them, in market value, is PEPE, which occupies only 25th position in the CoinGecko ranking.
Considering the 10 biggest cryptocurrencies (excluding the stablecoins USDT and USDC and the synthetic ETH), the one that delivered the highest annual appreciation (so far) is also a memecoin: Dogecoin (DOGE) up 250% yearly. Secondly, comes the XRP up 233%. The next cryptocurrencies are:
The only crypto asset in the Top 10 to record losses in 2024 (-12%) was Avalanche (AVAX)as shown by data from the Blockchain Center platform.
THE Bitcoin also reached its all-time high in 2024, reaching $108,135 on December 17th. Likewise, the BNB reached the ATH (all time high) of $788 on December 4th, SUN reached $263 on November 23, TRON registered $0.43 on December 4th and Toncoin recorded its all-time high of $8.25 on June 15th.
