Sharing Netflix account with friends,
Netflix subscribers may have to start paying more for sharing their account with someone outside the family before the end of the year. The streaming service also wants to have introduced a subscription with ads by that time, reports The New York Times.
A user’s account may not officially “be shared with anyone outside the household,” according to Netflix’s terms of service. However, the company always turned a blind eye when users did.
Recently, however, the platform announced that it had lost subscribers for the first time in a decade. The streaming service blames that on inflation, the war in Ukraine and fierce competition.
The company must therefore generate more income in other ways.
Netflix reported last month that it is open to the idea of offering low-cost subscriptions with advertising. In addition, it hopes for additional income through customers who share their account with friends or family. Subscribers have to pay more for this.
According to The New York Times, an internal message to employees would show that Netflix wants to introduce the subscription with advertising in the last three months of this year.
The extra payment for sharing accounts should be introduced somewhere around “the same period”.
Sharing Netflix account with friends may already cost extra money by the end of 2022
