THE South Zone supermarkettraditional in noble areas of Rio de Janeiro, started a pilot project to accept cryptocurrencies as a form of payment. The novelty results from a partnership with Transfero, a company specialized in blockchain technology.
As Valor Econômico reported, initially, the service is only available at the Ipanema unit, located at Rua Barão da Torre, 220. However, the The idea is to expand functionality to the entire network throughout 2025.
According to Victor Monteiro, digital manager at Zona Sul, the company had been planning to work with digital currencies for some time. However, it faced challenges related to operational restrictions.
Therefore, the partnership with Transfero brought a viable solution, with the creation of a checkout platform compatible with several digital wallets available on the market. In practice, this eliminates dependence on a single application.
How payment with cryptocurrencies works
The payment process is simple. At the time of purchase, the customer chooses the option “Crypto Checkout Transfer” on the payment machine. Then, scan a QR Code, select the blockchain of your choice and perform the payment using cryptocurrencies or stablecoins.
The integration of payment machines with Transfero allows instant transfer of amounts to the cashier.
Among the accepted cryptocurrencies are Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), Solana (SOL) and BNBin addition to stablecoins such as USDC, USDT, ARZ, BRZ and EuroC.
As highlighted by Monteiro, the inclusion of stablecoins especially serves foreign customers and touristswho can use these digital currencies without worrying about exchange rates when returning to their home countries.
Juliana Felippe, CRO at Transfero, highlighted that payment with cryptocurrencies offers more security and fewer feeswhen compared to traditional means such as credit cards. In the case of card transactions, the seller bears fees from the machine, brand and banking institutions. These costs do not exist in cryptocurrency operations.
Monteiro also reinforced that the digital crypto wallets have more advanced security mechanisms than conventional financial apps. He also noted that the relatively complex usability of digital wallets can offer greater protection in situations of robbery or theft.
