Surfer Rio Waida Stops in Second Round

Jakarta, Todaysgist.com – Indonesian surfer Rio Waida was stopped in the second round of the 2024 Paris Olympics after finishing second in the elimination round.

Competing at Teahupo’o Beach, Tahiti, French Polynesia, Sunday (28/7/2024) afternoon local time or Monday (29/7/2024) morning WIB, Rio recorded his two best waves with a total of 5.40 points, 4.67 points and 0.73 points respectively.

Shown on heat 3, Rio competed with South African representative Jordy Smith who earned 9.5 points with two best waves, 5.5 points and 4.00 points respectively to advance to the third round.

Reported Between, Jordy started the competition after 3 minutes of the race, taking the first wave that received a score of 5.5 points from the jury. The windy weather made it difficult for surfers to find big waves.

In the 12th minute, Rio, wearing a blue jersey, managed to get the first wave which gave him the first score of 4.67 points. The 24-year-old surfer then took a small wave which only added 0.20 points. Jordy then got the fourth wave which turned out to be sweet, becoming his second best wave score of 4 points.

Time continued to roll, Rio, who had the opportunity to be the first priority holder (P1), held back the opportunity he had for quite a long time.

In the last minute, the Javanese-Japanese surfer used the opportunity to take the third wave, but only gave him a score of 0.73.

The race ended with Jordy, currently ranked seventh in the World Surf League (WSL), taking seven waves. Meanwhile, Rio, currently ranked 10th in the WSL, took three waves.

Rio failed in the second round of the 2024 Paris Olympics, a result no better than the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The 2024 Paris Olympics will be Rio’s second time representing Indonesia in the world multi-sport event. He was stopped in the third round or last 16 of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after losing to Japanese surfer Kanoa Igarashi, who went on to win the silver medal.
