Telegram CEO Pavel Durov released from prison on bail

Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of Telegram, has been released on bail in France after facing multiple charges. Durov, who was detained at Le Bourget airport on August 24, now faces serious charges including complicity in the dissemination of images of child sexual abuse, drug trafficking and money laundering.

French authorities allege that Telegram has been facilitating illicit activities, which led to Durov’s arrest.

If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison. Bail was set at €5 million (approximately $36 million). Durov was released from prison on the condition that he not leave French territory and report to authorities twice a week.

According to Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau, Telegram has been frequently mentioned in investigations involving serious crimes such as online hate and drug trafficking.

The prosecutor also highlighted Telegram’s “almost total” lack of cooperation with legal requests, which has led to significant friction with French authorities. This lack of response from Telegram is not unique to France, with other countries, such as Belgium, also reporting similar difficulties.

Telegram’s uncooperative attitude was the main catalyst for the French public prosecutor’s office’s specialized organized crime unit to launch an investigation to determine whether the company’s executives can be held criminally liable for using the platform for illicit activities.

Despite the charges and Durov’s arrest, Telegram continues to operate normally, maintaining its privacy policy and end-to-end encryption. However, the situation has sparked a heated debate about the extent to which tech companies should cooperate with government authorities in criminal investigations.

Durov’s arrest could set a significant precedent for other digital platforms, calling into question the extent to which companies should comply with governments’ demands for user information.
