Two additional goals from Peeradon Chamratsamee and Teerasak Poeiphimai in added time ensured Thailand’s victory and confirmed their position at the top of the group standings.
With this result, Thailand, the defending champion, qualified for the next round. The last time Singapore managed to beat Thailand was in 2012, when they won 3-1 at home and took home the AFF Cup championship trophy. Since then, The Lions have not been able to win the title.
In the FIFA world rankings, Thailand is in 97th position, far above Singapore which is ranked 161st. Currently, Thailand leads group A with nine points from three wins, while Singapore is in second place with six points.
The third and fourth positions are occupied by Cambodia and Malaysia, who each pocketed four points.
Furthermore, The Lions will travel to Bukit Jalil Stadium, Kuala Lumpur, on 20 December 2024, to face their arch rivals, Malaysia. Singapore only needs a draw to advance to the semifinals, while a defeat will hand Malaysia a ticket to the 2024 AFF Cup semifinals.
The last time Singapore reached the semifinals of this tournament was in 2021, before being eliminated by Indonesia.
Singapore started their campaign in the 2024 AFF Cup with a 2-1 win against Cambodia in the opening match, thanks to goals from Faris and Shawal. This victory was followed by a landslide 3-0 victory over Timor Leste in Hanoi. A penalty from Kyoga Nakamura and two additional goals from Shawal sealed the win. However, the results of the Singapore vs Thailand match mean that The Lions are still unable to qualify for the 2024 AFF Cup semifinals.
