Jason Lowery, US Space Force Major and author of the famous book Softwarebelieves that Bitcoin (BTC) is a non-conservative technology that transforms physical energy into digital energy. Therefore, Lowery believes that the US needs to use cryptocurrency not just financially, but as a defense strategy.
According to Lowery, Bitcoin is a secure way to take “watts to protect cyberspace” rather than coded logic. For Lowery, networking provides a different perspective on protecting everything from software instructions to sophisticated data structures.
Lowery’s vision of Bitcoin as a way to improve national defense has put him in the spotlight, especially in the wake of recent political changes. Since Donald Trump’s victory, the market has been speculating whether the new president might include BTC in the US financial strategy.
However, what the major proposes goes further. Instead of analyzing only the financial aspect, he highlights the strategic relevance of Bitcoin as a national defense policy. For Lowery, Bitcoin uses physical energy to protect cyberspace and is therefore much more than a simple financial asset.
Bitcoin as space defense
Last year, Lowery shared a diagram illustrating how Bitcoin could change the current system. According to the military, the current power structure is based on real assets such as land, gold, oil and shares. However, Lowery argues that such a structure is based on military strength and power.
On the other hand, BTC is unique in that it is not necessary to take anyone’s life to protect wealth monetized via BTC. In this sense, he claims that Bitcoin’s energy use is worth it.
Lowery believes that through the physical security of information and digital assets in a trustless, peer-to-peer (P2P) manner, Bitcoin’s Proof of Work mechanism has realized cyber sovereignty similar to the land, sea, air, and space domains over the which nations are built. Bitcoin was a revolutionary advance in computer science, which he felt was highly undervalued.
Major Lowery added that policymakers need better advice on how to differentiate Bitcoin from other blockchain technologies, as Lowery believes understanding these important differences represents the first step to creating successful national strategies.
It is not known for sure what he thinks about Senator Cynthia Lummis’ new proposal on including BTC in the US strategic reserves. In his only comment on the matter, Lowery said that any US Bitcoin plans would fall far short of what national security needs.
The reason is that the moment Bitcoin was perceived as analogous to “biopower”, it would be insufficient to protect the nation’s interests by maintaining just one million units. To ensure access to Bitcoin and further strengthen the security of the blockchain, Lowery advocated the creation of a robust hash industry that he called the “US Hash Force.”
