This Tuesday, (03) Donald Trump announced the appointment of Paul Atkins to lead the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Atkins’ appointment, which is still awaiting acceptance, represents a significant change in the regulatory stance towards cryptocurrencies in the country.
Paul Atkinsformer SEC commissioner, has risen to prominence for his continued support of the crypto industry. During his time on the commission during the George W. Bush administration, Atkins demonstrated an interest in promoting financial innovations.
Since then, he has been an active industry advocate, guiding digital finance companies and co-chairing the Token Alliance at the Digital Chamber of Commerce.
SEC will have cryptocurrency advocate as president
Trump is awaiting confirmation from Atkins about accepting the position. If Atkins decides not to accept, the president will select another candidate for the position. If accepted, Atkins’ nomination will be submitted to the US Senate for approval.
According to sources close to the administration, Atkins is highly respected by Senate Republicans, who value his libertarian stance and support for innovation.
JW Verret, professor at George Mason University and former member of the SEC Advisory Committee, stated:
Since 2017, Atkins has been an active voice in promoting cryptocurrency-friendly policies. Through his consultancy, Potomak Global Partners, he advises digital companies on regulatory issues, contributing to a more favorable environment for the development of the sector.
Atkins’ appointment follows Gary Gensler’s decision to leave the SEC in January. Under Gensler’s leadership, the SEC has stepped up enforcement of securities laws to cryptocurrencies, moving against several crypto entities over allegations of fraud and unregistered offerings.
If Atkins takes office, a more innovative and pro-cryptocurrency approach is expected at the SEC. John Reed Stark, who worked with Atkins at the SEC in 2008, praised his leadership style:
