United States President-elect Donald Trump’s team is evaluating the creation of a specific position focused on policies related to cryptocurrencies. If this is confirmed, it will be a first for the White House. The information comes from a Bloomberg report, which cites sources close to the matter.
According to the article, Trump’s transition team is analyzing candidates to fill the position. However, it is not yet clear whether the position will have a high-ranking status in the government or whether it will be structured as a kind of “cryptocurrency czar”. Representatives for Trump’s transition team did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
During the election campaign, Trump expressed support for the cryptocurrency industry and announced specific proposals, such as firing current US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chairman Gary Gensler, creating a Presidential Cryptocurrency Advisory Council, and establishing a national strategic reserve of Bitcoin.
Additionally, he promised to look into the case of Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht and possibly commute his life sentence.
Interactions with cryptocurrency industry leaders
After his electoral victory, Trump has already appointed executives with positions favorable to cryptocurrencies to key positions in his administration. Among the nominees are Howard Lutnick, CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, to lead the Department of Commerce, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., known for his affinity with Bitcoin, for the position of secretary of Health and Human Services.
Important figures in the cryptocurrency sector have sought rapprochement with Trump’s transition team. Brad Garlinghouse, CEO of Ripple, said he had spoken to people close to the president-elect about possible appointments. Circle representatives also held dialogues with the team, according to information from The New York Times.
Furthermore, Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase, would have discussed with Trump about cryptocurrencies in general terms and also about possible names to lead the SEC and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), as reported by Fortune magazine.
If the new position is confirmed, it could signal a more strategic approach by the Trump administration in relation to the cryptocurrency sector, marking an advance in public policies aimed at the digital asset market.
