US Attorney Indicts 2 Involved In Bitcoin Theft, Worth Fantastic

Todaysgist, News – The US Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia announced that two people have been charged with conspiring to steal and launder more than $230 million (Rp. 3.48 trillion) in cryptocurrency from a victim in Washington DC.

The defendants fraudulently gained access to victims’ cryptocurrency accounts and then transferred the victims’ funds into their possession.

“They laundered the proceeds, including by moving funds through various mixers, exchanges, pass-through wallets, and virtual private networks (VPNs) to mask their true identities,” the DA’s Office said, as quoted by Bitcoin.com, Tuesday (9/24/2024).

Authorities also said the stolen cryptocurrency was used to fund a lavish lifestyle including international travel, nightclubs, luxury cars, watches, jewelry, designer handbags and rental homes in Los Angeles and Miami.

A report from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) revealed that losses from crypto fraud schemes soared to USD 3.96 billion or equivalent to IDR 61.1 trillion in 2023. This is a 53 percent increase from the previous year.

According to details from its latest report, the FBI’s Internet Crime Trial Center (IC3) received more than 69,000 complaints related to crypto fraud in 2023. The FBI also stated that total crypto losses across all actions fell to USD 5.6 billion or equivalent to IDR 86.4 trillion.
