Vitalik Buterin proposes running Ethereum nodes on Mars for interplanetary decentralization

Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of the Ethereum network, recently raised the possibility of running Ethereum nodes on Mars. The developer presented a bold perspective on how blockchain could accompany humanity in its space expansion.
During an interview, Buterin discussed the feasibility of establishing an Ethereumdf network in an interplanetary environment, raising questions about decentralization and the technical limitations involved.
Buterin’s proposal faces a significant obstacle: latency. According to him, the average distance between Earth and Mars is approximately 400 million kilometers. This distance would cause a delay of up to 20 minutes for the transmission of signals between the planets, even at the speed of light. This response time would make fast synchronization, essential for validating blocks and ensuring consensus on the network, unfeasible.
Buterin explained that with the current consensus configuration of the Ethereum network, real-time communication between nodes on different planets becomes impractical. For him, running network nodes on Mars would only be possible with the help of an independent layer (Layer 2) to carry out transactions locally.
Ethereum L2 Network: The Solution for Mars
Vitalik argues that an L2 network on Mars could be autonomous and efficient to process the transactions of the inhabitants of the red planet. This independent layer would allow local operations to be validated in real time, without the need for constant synchronization with the main network (Layer 1) on Earth.
Thus, the network on Mars would send batches of transactions to the main layer only at specific times, drastically reducing interplanetary communication.
This structure brings not only efficiency, but also autonomy, allowing Mars to operate with internal decentralization without needing a direct and immediate connection with Earth. Furthermore, this approach would strengthen the security of the Ethereumdf network, maintaining historical copies of data on several planets and favoring censorship resistance.
For running Ethereum nodes on Mars to work, Buterin believes completely new protocols will be needed. Currently, consensus algorithms rely on fast communication between nodes; however, in a scenario where nodes are millions of kilometers apart, latency would compromise this synchrony.
The new protocols should enable the exchange of information over wider time intervals, ensuring security and verification.
Vitalik also predicts that interplanetary cryptocurrency networks will need their own consensus and security mechanisms to operate independently of us on Earth. This would reinforce censorship resistance while maintaining data integrity and decentralization of the Ethereumdf network, even in an environment with limited communication conditions.
