Birthday special: Begum Parveen Sultana is the queen of classical singing

Mumbai-based Begum Parveen Sultana is a renowned Assamese Hindustani classical singer from the Patiala Gharana. She is one of the famous classical singers of India and is known as the queen of classical singing. Parveen Sultana was awarded the Padma Shri award in the year 1976. She is the youngest woman to receive this award at the age of 23.

Parveen Sultana was born on 10 July 1950 in Dhakapatti, Nagaon city of Assam to Ikramul Majeed and Marufa Majeed. Her father, Late Ikramul Majeed was her first guru and taught her singing. Parveen Sultana also got her initial training from her grandfather Mohammad Nazif Khan. She later moved to Kolkata to learn music under the guidance of Late Pandit Chinmoy Lahiri and from the year 1973 she became a disciple of Ustad Dilshad Khan of Patiala Gharana. Parveen Sultana is married to Ustad Dilshad Khan and they have a daughter.

Parveen Sultana gave her first stage performance in the year 1962 when she was only 12 years old and has been recording music since 1965. He has sung for many Bollywood movies like Gadar, Kudrat, Do Boond Pani and Pakeezah.

Recently he has sung the theme song of Vikram Bhatt’s film 1920. Parveen Sultana has recorded music for HMV, Polydor, Music India, Bharat Records, Auvidis, Magnasound, Sonodisc and Amigo. Parveen Sultana has worked with many music composers like RD Burman, Naushad, Laxmikant Pyarelal and Shekar Jaikishan. Parveen Sultana along with her husband has toured and performed in different parts of the country and abroad including USA, France, Russia, Germany, Australia, Dubai, Afghanistan. He has started an institute named “Gan Ranga Sangeet Sabha” in Mumbai. She currently lives in Mumbai.

Sultana was awarded Miyan Tansen Award in the year 1986, Sangeet Samragyi Award by the Government of Assam in the year 1994. Also Filmfare Best Female Playback Singer Award for the song “Hume Tumse Pyaar Kitna” in the year 1981. He also received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in the year 1999, the Cleopatra of Music Award in the year 1972 and the Shrimant Sankardeva Award from the Government of Assam.
