Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa gets lead role in series Doctor Who, Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa will star in the British science fiction series Doctor Who. The actor takes over the role of Jodie Whittaker, reports the British broadcaster BBC. This makes Gatwa the first black actor to play the time traveler.
Gatwa will be seen as The Doctor, a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey. The Scottish actor says he is “honoured, enthusiastic and a bit scared” with the new role as Time Lord.
“This role and show mean so much to so many people around the world, including myself, and every extremely talented pastor of mine has taken that responsibility with the utmost care.”
Russell T. Davies, showrunner of the BBC hit, stated that Gatwa’s audition was “mind-boggling” and calls him “a talent”. In the series, The Doctor travels through time and space in his TARDIS, a time machine that looks from the outside like a blue English police cabin from before mobile communication.
The first episode of Doctor Who is from 1963. The 29-year-old Gatwa is the fourteenth actor to take on this leading role, after Whittaker announced in July that he would retire from the role after five years.
She was the first female actor to land the role of The Doctor. Gatwa can be seen as Time Lord from 2023.
