The Amsterdam universities and the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS) are not worried about resuming the board scholarships for the Amsterdam student body A.S.C./A.V.S.V. The educational institutions announced this on Tuesday after reports about misogynistic speeches.

The University of Amsterdam (UvA), vu University Amsterdam (VU) and AUAS withdrew all scholarships in September 2021 due to excesses during the hazing period. The corps would no longer receive grants worth about 15,000 euros for at least one year.

It has yet to be decided when the fairs may be resumed. “But this incident certainly does not help to change our position in this respect,” said UvA spokesperson Yasha Lange on behalf of the three institutions.

Earlier on Tuesday, it appeared that several female (and some male) members of A.S.C./A.V.S.V. feel unsafe because of sexist speeches by four male members. “We were promised that we would work on a cultural change. This does not yet testify to that,” said the spokesman. “We think this is a very serious incident.”

Speeches were ‘downright insulting, shameful and sad’

An internal letter in which the women express their concerns has been signed by 273 female and some male corps members. The letter is in the hands of NU.nl. The top of the association has research done, after which sanctions may follow for the four.

The A.S.C./A.V.S.V. had a so-called ‘gentlemen’s dinner’ at the NDSM shipyard in Amsterdam on Sunday. Dinner is part of a multi-day lustrum. Four prominent male members gave speeches there, which the women said were “downright insulting, embarrassing and sad” in nature. There were only men in the room.

One of the men is said to have said that “women are nothing more than whores”. Another is said to have proclaimed that “the men will break women’s necks to stick their dick in”. He is also said to have called women “sperm buckets”. A video of one of the speeches is circulating on the internet. In the video you can also hear the audience chanting “whore”.

The women also write, among other things, “to be done with the sexism” within the association. The Corps Senate has launched an internal investigation into all speakers. “Sanctions may follow, including suspension or termination of membership.” The speaking men would hold important positions within A.S.C./A.V.S.V. Reunionists also strongly condemn the statements

The Association of Reunionists (VvR) of the Amsterdam corps also condemns the misogynistic statements. The speakers must answer for their misogynistic statements on Tuesday, writes the board of the reunionists in a letter.

According to the VvR, a lot of work has been done in the past year on a culture change within A.S.C./A.V.S.V. “We know that changing behavior takes years, that years of ingrained customs and habits do not just disappear, even if there is a need for it. We need to get rid of this unsafe culture. Also because this ultimately kills our association.”

The board of the VvR says it is also “hopeful” that on Monday about four hundred members – mainly women – sent a letter to the rector of A.S.C/A.V.S.V. to express their dissatisfaction. (Money tap universities)

During hazing, prospective members were injured

It is the second time in a short time that the Amsterdam student association has been discredited. During the hazing of 2021, several students were injured after “gross abuse and humiliation” in at least six disputes of the Amsterdam student body.

As a result, some prospective members suffered physical injuries. For example, they had bruises and wounds or they could no longer walk properly.
