Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan warns scientists about the dangers of AI

Nolan continued, what was scary was when it happened to the AI. According to him, if AI systems can get into defense infrastructure, they can fill it with nuclear weapons.

“And if we allow people to say that it’s a separate entity from the people who use it, program it, use AI, then we’re doomed. It has to be about accountability,” Nolan said.

Nolan does not refer to one particular company. However, companies such as Google, Meta, and Netflix, rely heavily on algorithms to maintain audiences.

Nolan also said that when he talks to researchers in the field of AI, he thinks this is their “Openheimer moment”.

“They are looking for the story to say what is the responsibility of scientists who develop new technologies, which may have unintended consequences,” said the Memento director.

Nolan concluded, not claiming Oppenheimer’s story would be an easy answer. “But at least it serves as a cautionary tale.”
