Knowing nothing beyond the working-class life he was born into, the stubborn Lu Xiaolu reluctantly sets out on the path he must follow. At nineteen in 1990s China, he feels pressure to follow the example of those around him and takes a job at the city's saccharine factory. Little by little, he adapts to the factory's bureaucratic routine, making the best of the situation, interacting with co-workers, flirting with girls and refusing to completely give in to the expectations of those around him.

As Lu Xiaolu progresses, a startling portrait of a China in economic expansion emerges; the propaganda of a common objective gives way to a system of results that he sees as indifferent to individual happiness. But thanks to the relationships he develops, Lu Xiaolu decides to fight for the life he wants.
