Asian Cup: Indonesia in Hard Group with Japan and Iraq

– Indonesia is in a tough group in the Asian Cup finals in Qatar which will be held from 12 January 2024.

The results of the draw which was held at the Katara Opera House, Doha, Thursday (11/5/2023), determined Indonesia to be in Group D, along with Japan, Iraq and Vietnam. Japan has won the Asian Cup four times, namely in 1992, 2000, 2004 and 2011. Meanwhile, Iraq has won it once, namely in 2007.

Defending champion Qatar, which also hosts the championship this time, is in Group A with China, Tajikistan and Lebanon. While another strong team, Australia is in Group B with Uzbekistan, Syria and India.

Holder of three Asian Cup titles, Saudi Arabia is in Group F with Thailand, Kyrgystan and Oman. Iran, which has also won three times, is in Group C, along with the United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong and Palestine.

Another tough team that has twice won Asia, South Korea, is in Group E with Malaysia, Jordan and Bahrain.

The tournament was originally scheduled to be held in China from 16 June to 16 July 2023. However, on 14 May 2022, the AFC announced that China would not host the tournament due to circumstances caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and China’s Zero-Covid policy.

On 17 October, AFC announced that the tournament would be held in Qatar. Qatar will be the first country to host three Asian Cups, after 1988 and 2011.

Due to high summer temperatures in the Persian Gulf and Qatar’s participation in the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup, the tournament was postponed to 12 January-10 February 2024.

The round of 16 will be held January 31-February 2. The quarter-finals will be held February 4 and 5. While the semifinals will be on 7 and 8 February, and the final will be held on 10 February 2023.

Group D: Japan, Indonesia, Iraq, Vietnam

Group E: South Korea, Malaysia, Jordan and Bahrain.
