Beat New Zealand, Philippines Make History at Women’s World Cup
Jakarta, Beritasatu.com– The Philippines made history after winning the 2023 Women’s World Cup, Tuesday (25/7/2023) at the Wellington Regional Stadium.
In this match, Alen Stajcic’s squad managed to beat the host New Zealand, 1-0. Sarina Bolden scored the only goal in the Group A elimination match. This Western Sidney Wanderers player scored against New Zealand in the 24th minute.
The success of the Philippines is history because they became the second team from Southeast Asia to win the Women’s World Cup after Thailand in 2015. In the Women’s World Cup which was held in Canada, Thailand narrowly won 3-2 over a team from the African continent, Ivory Coast, also in the group stage.
This was also the first win for the Philippines in their debut at the Women’s World Cup. Thanks to three points from defeating New Zealand, the Philippines is now in third place in the Group A standings. The first position is occupied by Switzerland, which has four points.
Against New Zealand, this is the second time the Philippines has won the 2023 World Cup. In their first match, Hall Long and friends gave up 0-2 to Switzerland.
The Philippines will play the match or final group stage phase on Sunday (30/7/2023) against Norway at Eden Park Stadium, Auckland. On the same day and hour, Switzerland will host New Zealand at the stadium
Forsyth Barr, Dunedin. These two simultaneous matches will determine which representatives from Group A will advance to the round of 16.
With one win against the Philippines and one draw against Norway, Switzerland now leads Group A. The second position is occupied by New Zealand, which has the same points as the Philippines but is superior on goal difference.
Apart from the Philippines, another Southeast Asian country that has qualified for the 2023 World Cup finals is Vietnam. They have played their first game against the United States on July 22. However, Mai Duc Chung’s team lost 0-3.
Vietnam will only play their second match in the group stage on July 27 against Portugal.
