Beware of FOMO Traps on Social Media, Here’s How to Overcome It

Liputan6.com, Jakarta – According to a product consultant, Anwar Sadat, fear of missing out (FOMO) is the worry or anxiety that a person feels when they feel they have no access or are not involved in activities or experiences that are being carried out by other people.

FOMO often occurs due to constant exposure to information from digital media which makes a person feel that they must always be connected with other people and feel left out if they are not active on social media or don’t follow activities that are currently popular.

“Even though FOMO can be a common and natural experience, feeling too much pressure and worrying about being left behind can have a negative impact on one’s mental and emotional health,” said Anwar in a digital literacy workshop entitled ‘Recognize the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) Phenomenon in Media. “Examples of people who suffer from FOMO, namely feeling out of touch with information when they don’t have a cell phone; force yourself to buy trending goods or objects; always curious about other people’s social media accounts; or afraid of missing information in the WhatsApp group or on social media,” he said, quoted Friday (12/5/2023).
