Cyberattacks will become more sophisticated in 2024: Beware of hackers targeting the cloud and take advantage of AI

Russian and North Korean hackers are said to be using generative AI (GAI) tools to launch cyber attacks.

This was revealed by Microsoft and OpenAI, where both companies detailed how hackers linked to foreign governments took advantage of GAI.

Quoting Engadget, Friday (16/2/2024), the state-backed hacker used GAI for debugging code, searching for information on open source platforms, compiling phishin emails, and translating text.

OpenAI, the company that makes ChatGPT, said that it had closed the group's access to the GAI system after finding out they were using their tools.

One of these hacker groups is Forest Blizzard (Fancy Bear or APT 12). It was stated that they used the OpenAI platform.

These cybercriminals use OpenAI tools “primarily for open source research on satellite communications protocols and radar technology.”

“Not only that, they also use OpenAI tools to support creating cyber attack scripts,” said the company.

As a precaution, Microsoft said it had tracked 300 hacker groups, including 160 supported by certain countries.

Armed with this information, OpenAI is currently working to detect the perpetrators of cyber attacks and close their accounts.
