Felipe Simas reveals how to treat a rare disease that can cause vision loss – Cidades na Net

Felipe Simas revealed on his social networks this Monday, 29, that he was diagnosed with optic neuritis, a rare inflammation of the optic nerve. In the post, Simas explained that the condition could be an early sign of a broader autoimmune disease, neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), which affects the central nervous system.

“Today, I came to share with you a moment that affected our lives in an unexpected way. I, Felipe Simas, was diagnosed and faced with optic neuritis, a condition that may be one of the first signs of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) – a rare autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system, mainly the optic nerve and the spinal cord.” He described the symptoms as loss of vision and pain when moving the eyes, calling them “scary” and a “wake-up call” that something was wrong.

“Seeking medical help was crucial, and only then could I begin to understand what was happening,” said Simas. He emphasized the importance of paying attention to the body's signals and seeking a correct diagnosis. “My journey has highlighted the importance of not ignoring the signals our body gives us. It is vital to pay immediate attention to these symptoms and seek a correct diagnosis,” he concluded.

In January of this year, concerns about Simas' health began after he noticed abnormalities in his vision, especially in his right eye. “I noticed that my right eye had some spots, I wasn’t focusing very well,” he said on social media. After a day without improvement, Simas and his wife went to an ophthalmologist. During the consultation, a color examination was carried out which indicated significant differences between the two eyes, leading to the suspicion of optic neuritis.

An MRI was done immediately but did not provide a conclusive diagnosis at that time. The investigation continued and, after excluding other causes such as tumors, infections and viruses, the suspicion of an autoimmune condition became stronger.
