North Korean Hackers Are Back In Action, Now Targeting IT Companies To Steal Crypto

Liputan6.com, Jakarta A North Korean government-backed hacker group attacked a US IT management company and used it as a springboard to target cryptocurrency companies. the company and cybersecurity experts said on Thursday.

Reporting from Yahoo Finance, Friday (21/7/2023), hackers broke into Louisville, Colorado-based company JumpCloud in late June and used their access to the company’s systems to target about 5 of its clients who were crypto companies.

JumpCloud did not identify the affected customers, but cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike Holdings said the hackers involved were known to focus on cryptocurrency theft.

Chollima Labyrinth Hacking Group

CrowdStrike identified the hackers as “Labyrinth Chollima” one of several groups allegedly operating on behalf of North Korea. The hackers are allegedly responsible for working for North Korea’s Reconnaissance General Bureau (RGB), its main foreign intelligence agency.

Labyrinth Chollima is one of the most prolific hacker groups in North Korea and is said to be responsible for some of the most audacious and disruptive cyber intrusions in the isolated nation.

Cryptocurrency thefts have led to tantalizing losses: Blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis said last year groups linked to North Korea stole an estimated $1.7 billion in digital cash through various hacks.
