One third of cyber attacks in the world come from ransomware

Liputan6.com, Jakarta – One third of cyber attacks that occurred in cyberspace throughout 2023 turned out to come from ransomware. This information is based on the latest research results released by Kaspersky.

This cyber security company highlighted an increase in threats from targeted ransomware groups, with a figure of 30 percent globally, compared to 2022. Unmitigated, the number of victims is said to have increased by 71 percent.

Just to note, different from random attacks, this ransomware group, aka target group, targets government agencies, leading organizations and certain individuals within companies.

As cybercriminals continue to design sophisticated and extensive attacks, threats to cyber security are becoming greater.

Data from Kaspersky states that in 2023, Lockbit 3.0 will emerge as the most common ransomware. This ransomware leverages leaks to produce custom variants that target organizations around the world.

Then, the second ranked ransomware is BlackCat/APLHV, whose operations were successfully resisted by the collaborative efforts of the FBI and other institutions until December 2023. However, the BlackCats bounced back.

The third most frequently attacked ransomware is Cl0p. This ransomware breaches MoveIt's managed file transfer system. According to New Zealand security company Emsisoft, as of December 2023, this ransomware impacted more than 2,500 organizations.

Through Kaspersky's 2023 State of Ransomware report, several ransomware also appeared that year. Starting from BlackHunt, Rhysida, Akira, Mallox, and 3AM.

As the ransomware landscape evolves, other smaller and more difficult to catch groups are emerging and posing new challenges for law enforcement.

Regarding the WannaCry ransomware attack which shocked hundreds of countries a few days ago, two antivirus companies, Symantec and Kaspersky, suspect that North Korean hackers (North Korea) had a hand in the attack.
