Overcome Bublik Onslaught, Rublev to Wimbledon Quarterfinals

– Andrey Rublev overcame a ferocious attack from Alexander Bublik in a tense five-set match to reach the quarter-finals of Wimbledon for the first time after struggling to maintain a two-set lead.

Rublev, who is the seventh seed from Russia, avenged last month’s defeat in the Halle final by beating Bublik, 7-5, 6-3, 6-7 (6/8), 6-7 (5/7), 6-4, in the match Sunday (9/7/2023) local time.

At the start of the match, Rublev had to receive medical attention due to an injury to his finger. But she took the first set after Bublik, the 23rd seed from Kazakhstan, double faulted in the 12th game.

One break in the sixth game the second set became crucial because Rublev managed to strengthen his dominance in the match.

The third set continues tie-break and Bublik managed to catch up. In the fourth set, Rublev looked close to victory as he managed to create two match point in the 10th game. However, Bublik then succeeded in winning again tie-break.

In the decisive set, Rublev managed to pull off break which was especially important in the seventh game. He then creates match point and ensure victory with a ace.

“For me, it was a very lucky streak,” said Rublev, referring to his bid for victory AFPMonday.

“It’s all about luck, nothing else. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to do it again.”

Rublev revealed that even though Bublik was very strong on serve throughout the match, he still believed the opportunity would come.

“I just thought that it didn’t matter, I lost the third set and the fourth set,” said Rublev.

“I said to myself that if I kept playing, then there would be one chance. And in the end, when the opportunity came, I had a really good shot and was able to change the situation.”

Djokovic’s match against Hurkacz was stopped because it was past the match time limit. The second party was stopped when the time in England showed 22:30.
