Puma to Launch NFT Collection of Sneakers

Previously, Google Play had updated its policy to allow blockchain-based digital content, including non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and other tokenized digital assets, in the App Store.

This move was billed as a response to the growing interest in NFTs and their unique user experiences.

Google is teaming up with web3 game makers like Mythical Games to bring blockchain gaming identities to the masses.

“Happy to share that we are updating our policies to open up new ways to transact blockchain-based digital content in apps and games on Google Play. Including increasing user loyalty through unique NFT prizes,” said Google Play Product Manager, Joseph Mills, quoted from Cointelegraph, Thursday (12/7/2023).

Previously, blockchain game companies had difficulty distributing their games, and often relied on the open web for distribution. As part of the new policy, developers must be transparent with users about digital assets being tokenized.

According to the post, developers must clearly state whether a game allows users to earn or buy NFTs or cryptocurrencies.

In addition, game developers are not allowed to glamorize any earning potential from gaming or trading activities, nor are they allowed to sell loot boxes or allow players to gamble.

Google Play itself banned crypto mining apps in 2018 and removed the video game Bitcoin Blast for fraudulent practices in 2020.

Through this new policy, it is hoped that it will create a level playing field for developers and promote user trust and the responsible use of blockchain technology.

Google Play will implement a policy for all developers on its platform later this year. Google Play also indicated that they set these guidelines in collaboration with Web3 game leaders and will continue to engage with developers to understand the challenges and opportunities going forward.
