The Australian racer who won the 500cc world championship in 1987 believes the best thing a racer can do is retire.

For this reason, he advised Marquez to retire considering the series of accidents and injuries he had experienced.

“Marc had a lot of injuries, but he came back only to be injured again. In my time, if you have five or six crashes a year you can get serious injuries. However, with all the equipment today, the injuries the riders have fewer, but more crashes,” Gardner said.

With frequent accidents, Gardner assesses that it will change the mental and weaken the body’s condition.

“Everything becomes a cycle of frustration. In my opinion, Marquez should retire while he still can. I’m a big fan, but I’m afraid he will get hurt if he tries again. The bike has changed and the riders are much younger. He is 30 years old now and his mentality is different,” advice.
