Arsenal Officially Signs New Defender from Ajax

Arsenal have officially signed new player Jurrien Timber from Dutch club Ajax Amsterdam on a long-term contract.

Timber, defender of the Dutch national team, became the second recruit after Arsenal signed Kai Havertz from city rivals Chelsea FC.

“Dutch international Jurrien Timber has joined us from Ajax on a long-term contract,” the club announced on their website, Friday (14/7/2023).

According to the report of the famous transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, Timber was bought for 40 million euros or Rp. 672.5 billion by the Gunnerswith an additional option of five million euros.

Arsenal coach, Mikel Arteta, welcomed the arrival of the 22-year-old young defender at the Emirates Stadium.

“We are very pleased to have Jurrien with us. He is a young, versatile defender who will fit into our system of play and provide a huge addition of quality to our squad,” said Arteta.

Timber is a product of the Ajax academy and has joined since 2014. He made his professional debut in March 2020, when he helped his team win 3-1 over SC Heerenveen in the 2019/2020 Eredivisie competition.

Since his debut in March 2020, Timber has made 121 appearances in various competitions for Ajax, scoring six goals and providing four assists. He also managed to win the Dutch League twice (2020/2021, 2021/2022) and the KNVB Cup once (2020/2021).

At the international level, Timber has appeared in 15 matches and has twice been part of the team at major tournaments such as Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup.

“Jurrien is a young player who has achieved a lot. He has already had the experience of playing in major international tournaments more than once, as well as winning trophies with Ajax. We are very excited to welcome and integrate Jurrien into the squad,” said Arteta.

When asked about his move, Timber admitted that Arsenal was his favorite club since childhood. “I love watching Robin van Persie and of course, Thierry Henry. They are my favorite players,” said Timber.
