Barbenheimer Becomes a Trend because of Barbie and Oppenheimer Movies, Beware of Lurking Scammers

Liputan6.com, Jakarta – The simultaneous broadcast of Barbie and Oppenheimer sparked the “Barbenheimer” trend on the internet, where many people watched both films of different genres live on the same day.

However, internet users are again reminded of the dangers of cybercriminals who often take advantage of the latest trends for their own nefarious motives.

Cybersecurity firm Kaspersky found, scammers deceive unwary users, by distributing phishing scams that prey on the euphoria surrounding the film’s release.

The aim, of course, is to deceive individuals and in an illegitimate way obtain money and personal data from victims.

Olga Svistunova, security expert at Kaspersky warned, in the midst of the excitement of Barbie and Oppenheimer movies, internet users must be vigilant and comply with basic internet security rules.

“Although the experience is encouraging, we must not ignore the risks,” he said, as quoted in a press release, Friday (21/7/2023).

By maintaining an alert mindset and practicing safe online habits, we can fully enjoy the Barbie and Oppenheimer experience while protecting ourselves from the threats of the digital world.

Kaspersky found that one of the fraudulent websites lured users with a special offer on Barbie dolls, which coincided with the release of the film.

As well as the usual dolls, users are interested in buying the latest limited edition dolls, including one of the main actresses Margot Robbie, for around £12.

Buyers of the Barbie doll can add a helicopter for £56, bringing the total purchase cost to £60.
