Edwin van der Sar Stable but Still Concerned

– Former Netherlands and Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar’s condition remains stable but “still concerning” after sustaining bleeding around his brain.

The 52-year-old was admitted to intensive care on Friday and his family have expressed their gratitude for the messages of support they have received.

“Edwin van der Sar will remain in intensive care for the time being,” said a statement from Ajax, where the Dutchman was chief executive until the end of last season.

“His condition is stable but still concerning. Ajax is sharing this information on behalf of Annemarie van der Sar, Edwin’s wife,” wrote Ajax again.

“The Van der Sar family, along with Ajax, are very grateful and deeply moved by the many messages of support.”

Edwin van der Sar is in intensive care after suffering a brain haemorrhage Friday. The news about the health of the goalkeeper who once defended Juventus and Fulham was announced by the Dutch club, Ajax Amsterdam.

Van der Sar, 52, won the Premier League four times while at United, as well as the Champions League in 2008, which he also won while at Ajax.

After retiring, Van der Sar, who also played at Fulham before joining United, returned to Ajax and took over as chief executive in 2016. But at the end of last season he decided to step down.

Following a disappointing season for Ajax, the club finishing third in the Eredivisie and missing out on Champions League qualification, Van der Sar announced he would be stepping down from his role after almost 11 years on the club’s board.

“I feel the need to distance myself, rest and do other things,” he said on Twitter in late May.

“It’s a bad feeling to take a decision about the future of this wonderful club in the coming period. That’s why I decided to resign.”
