Insurance premiums Menzis and VGZ rise less than expected, The health care premiums of the basic insurances of Menzis and VGZ will increase in 2019. However, prices are rising less rapidly than the government had predicted.

The Menzis premium increases by 3 euros to 122 euros per month. The health insurer with about 2.2 million members sees the healthcare costs increase, but decides not to increase the premium by more than 3 euros.

The premium of the basic insurance of health insurer VGZ amounts to 120.95 euros. Compared to 2018, the monthly premium at this insurer increases by 4.75 euros.

The government stated on Budget Day that the premiums were expected to increase by an average of 10 euros.

“Ideally, we would not let the premium rise, but that is not wise given the rising healthcare costs. However, it has succeeded in limiting the increase,” says Financial Director Frank Janssen of Menzis. “That’s because we are able to limit costs together with healthcare providers and because Menzis uses part of the reserves to keep the premium affordable.”

VGZ says it can limit the premium increase by the effects of the so-called Sensible Care strategy and by reducing its own operating costs by 7 percent. With Sensible Care, the insurer refers to initiatives that make healthcare better, simpler and cheaper. VGZ has 2.1 million members and has the lowest premium of the large health insurers.

Menzis expects healthcare costs to continue to rise sharply over the years. “The challenge for us and for healthcare providers is to keep healthcare affordable,” says Janssen.
