LeBron James Changes Jersey Number Again, Here’s The Reason
– Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James has decided to change the number 6 he has worn for the last two seasons to number 23. James actually wore number 23 during his first three seasons in Los Angeles.
“This is LeBron’s decision,” said his agent, Rich Paul, to Dave McMenamin from ESPN, Sunday (16/7/2023).
The NBA announced in August it would be retiring the league-wide number 6 in honor of Bill Russell, a civil rights pioneer and Boston Celtics legend who has won 11 NBA titles.
Players already wearing the number 6, such as James, can continue to wear it. But James, who is one of the greatest players in NBA history, decided to change his jersey number to number 23.
“This is to honor Bill Russell,” said Paul.
James returned to number 23, the number he wore when he entered the league with the Cleveland Cavaliers as the first pick in the 2003 NBA draft. The NBA’s all-time leading point scorer switched to number 6 when he joined the Miami Heat in 2010, but returned to number 23. for his second stint in Cleveland starting in 2014.
When he joined the Lakers in 2018, he retained the number 23 before switching back to number 6 in 2021.
