Microsoft Gets Fine of IDR 3.9 Trillion Due to Cortana, What's Up?

Todaysgist.com, Jakarta – Microsoft was fined USD 242 million or around IDR 3.9 trillion, because its Cortana virtual assistant was deemed to have violated a patent.

The lawsuit against Microsoft was filed by another technology company, namely IPA Technologies.

Quoting Gizmochina, Monday (13/5/2024), Microsoft's Cortana virtual assistant is suspected of violating a patent belonging to IPA Technologies.

This decision was taken after a week-long trial, focusing on voice recognition technology in Cortana.

This lawsuit was filed in 2018 claiming that Cortana violates IPA patents for voice recognition technology used in communications software on Windows PCs or laptops.

Initially, this case involved several IPA patents. However, in the end, this lawsuit focused on just one thing.

Regarding this, a Microsoft spokesperson argued that they did not infringe and that the patent itself was invalid.

IPA itself is a subsidiary of Wi-LAN (owned jointly by Quarterhill and two other investment companies), obtaining patents from Siri Inc. from SRI International.

Apple itself officially acquired the Siri Company in 2010, and used the company's technology to create Siri.

Regarding this lawsuit, Microsoft plans to file an appeal. This is not the first time IPA has filed a lawsuit.

Previously, this company also sued Google and Amazon regarding similar patents. Amazon successfully defended itself, and Google's case is still ongoing today.
