Publisher Rights Presidential Decree Ratified, Meta: We Are Not Obligated to Pay for News Content
Liputan6.com, Jakarta – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has signed the Presidential Regulation on Publisher Rights on Tuesday, February 20 2024.
The Presidential Decree on Publisher Rights requires digital platform service providers, such as Google, Meta, X, and others, to provide compensation to media companies whose content is distributed via social media.
According to Jokowi, the Presidential Decree on Publisher Rights also contains details of digital platforms' responsibilities in supporting quality journalism.
Regarding this matter, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Threads, Instagram and WhatsApp, has opened its voice.
Through information via short message, the company has carried out consultations with policy makers and has understood the Perpers Publisher Rights Pers.
“We understand Meta will not be required to pay for news content that news publishers voluntarily post to our platform,” said Rafael Frankel, Director of Public Policy, Southeast Asia, Meta.
He added, “We appreciate the progress that policy makers have made in ensuring that the Presidential Decree on Publisher Rights in Supporting Quality Journalism recognizes the benefits news publishers gain from the services we provide.”
Quoting the NERA Economic Consulting research report, “many media or news publishers share article content on Meta's social media platforms, not the other way around.”
In the research results written by Dr. Jeffrey Eisenach, Adjunct Professor at George Mason University School of Law, “globally, more than 90 percent of organic views on article links from news publishers are links posted by the media themselves.”
