Van Nistelrooy Resigns from PSV Eindhoven Coach Seat

Former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has resigned as head coach of PSV Eindhoven, ahead of the final match of the 2022/2023 Dutch League (Eredivisie) season.

Van Nistelrooy (46) signed a three-year contract at the start of the season but feels there is not enough support for him within the club. Together with PSV, the former Dutch national team striker has won two domestic trophies this season, after defeating Ajax in the Johan Cruyff Shield and KNVB Cup.

“Head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy announced on Wednesday morning that he would be leaving PSV. Following the internal discussions that took place in recent weeks, a meeting was held on Tuesday evening between the board of directors and Van Nistelrooy,” PSV wrote in a statement.

“Van Nistelrooy reported this morning that he doesn’t think there is enough support within the club to last much longer. PSV regrets Van Nistelrooy’s decision and thanks him for winning the Johan Cruyff Shield and KNVB Cup this season, and hopes to close the football year with a second place. “

Fred Rutten has been appointed as the man to replace the Dutchman for the final game of the season, before the club seeks a permanent solution. PSV can secure second place behind champions Feyenoord on Sunday if they can beat AZ Alkmaar.

This season in European competition, Van Nistelrooy failed to get his team past Rangers in the Champions League play-offs. In the Europa League competition, his team was defeated by Sevilla in the knockout round.

In the transfer market, the former Real Madrid striker lost two key stars, Cody Gakpo and Noni Madueke who left for the Premier League to join Liverpool and Chelsea.
