18 years in prison and tbs demanded for killing and setting fire to The Hague rugby star
18 years in prison, The Public Prosecution Service (OM) on Tuesday demanded a prison sentence of eighteen years and tbs with forced nursing against Ferry T. (42) from The Hague for killing Renée Barendregt. The 23-year-old rugby star was found in may last year in the bushes in Scheveningen. She had been stabbed with a knife and her body had been set on fire.
T. said earlier on Tuesday that he could not remember anything about the incident. “I can’t imagine I did it. But I see the evidence and then there is a very good chance that I did it”, the suspect in the court in The Hague.
However, the prosecutor does not believe any of a possible amnesia. Experts also see no evidence of the degree of memory loss that T. is talking about.
A motive for the killing of Barendregt is unclear. It seems that the player at the Haagsche Rugby Club (HRC) was a random victim. Barendregt cycled home from a party at night, T. was driving the scooter around seemingly aimlessly when they passed each other. T. overtook Barendregt, waited in a side street and then went after her.
Encounter T. and victim captured on video
The encounter was recorded by several cameras. The shocking images and sounds of the confrontation between the two could be seen and heard in court on Tuesday. The victim’s family left the room when that happened.
Barendregt’s mother read a victim statement. Among other things, she told about her daughter’s new job: she was going to work for the fire department. “Renée was hired by the Fire Department of The Hague the day before her tragic end.
It is also so terribly painful in that context that she was found burning by her future colleagues.”
T. himself frequently burst into tears during the hearing. The president of the court told the defendant that there are other people in the room “who have much more reason to cry. I want you to be a big guy today and get through this without crying.”
