Appearing dominant, Verstappen won the sprint session at the Austrian GP
– Max Verstappen from the Red Bull team appeared dominant and won the Austrian Grand Prix Sprint race which was held at the Red Bull Ring Circuit, Saturday (1/7/2023).
This success followed strong performances from Verstappen during main race qualifying and sprint qualifying shootout for two days straight. According to official Formula 1 statistics, Verstappen finished the Sprint with 24 laps, with the same team’s Sergio Perez and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz in second and third respectively.
Perez is quite far from Verstappen with a time difference of 21.048 seconds, while Sainz is 23.088 seconds behind the Dutch driver. Sainz admitted that the Red Bull team was a bit quicker than his team that day.
Although Verstappen faced early difficulties and even lost the lead to teammate Perez, he quickly recovered and took the lead at the front, pulling away from his rivals to reach the finish line first.
In addition, Charles Leclerc, a teammate of Sainz, was penalized in the Sprint race for obstructing McLaren’s Oscar Piastri during qualifying or shootout. As a result, Leclerc dropped three places to ninth on the Sprint grid and finished the race in 12th place, more than 50 seconds clear of Verstappen.
The change to the Sprint’s starting grid due to Leclerc’s suspension promoted Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, as well as Alpine’s Esteban Ocon to start one step earlier than their original positions from the round. shootout. Stroll and Alonso finished fourth and fifth in the Austrian Sprint Grand Prix.
The Austrian Grand Prix continues until Sunday (2/7) local time.
