Canadian Government Stops Ads on Facebook and Instagram, Demands Access to News Content Stopped
Liputan6.com, Jakarta – The Canadian government said it would stop Facebook and Instagram ads, in response to the two platforms’ refusal to pay for news content served on the platforms. Instead of complying, Meta stopped showing news on both platforms.
For information, Meta as the owner of Facebook and Instagram previously refused to comply with the rules regarding publishers news, the Online News Act, in that country.
Meanwhile, according to Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez on Wednesday this week local time, the Canadian government spends on Facebook and Instagram ads annually, reaching more than USD 7.5 million.
Even so, according to Rodriguez, the Canadian government is still paving the way to resolve the problem that made Google and Meta stop access to news content in that country.
The government is also in the process of finalizing regulations requiring platforms to share a portion of their advertising revenue, before the law is officially implemented at the end of this year. Previously, this rule, which is also known as Bill C-18, was ratified last month.
“We can’t continue to pay dollars for advertising to Meta, while they refuse to pay Canadian news organizations their fair share,” said Rodriguez. New York PostThursday (6/7/2023).
The law itself was created after calls from the Canadian media industry for stricter regulation by internet giants so news businesses can recoup the financial losses they are experiencing as Facebook and Google gain a larger share of the online advertising market.
Previously, Google followed Meta’s lead to remove the or link link Canadian news on their Search Engine, following the passage of the Online News Act in that country. This was conveyed through a blog post by Kent Walker, President of Global Affairs, Canada.
