Chris John Wants Erick Thohir to Help Revise Professional Boxing in Indonesia

It has been quite a long time since Indonesia has had a professional boxer who is able to compete on the world stage. Even though Indonesia never gave birth to boxers who were able to make the nation proud by becoming champions at the international level.

Call it Ellyas Pical whose name is so phenomenal, there is also Chris John to Daud Jordan who is respected by his opponents when competing in the ring. But now our professional boxing is like suspended animation. No new names have appeared, one of the main factors is the lack of matches.

Indonesian boxing legend, Chris John said that one way to make the world of Indonesian boxing more lively and to produce high-achieving athletes is to regularly hold boxing championships.

According to the boxer nicknamed The Dragon, with regular boxing championships, the boxing world in Indonesia will again give birth to great talents such as Ellyas Pical, Daud Jordan, to Ongen Saknosiwi.

“As we know that currently there are almost no more regular boxing match events. And that has a huge impact on the progress of boxing, especially professionalism in Indonesia,” said Chris John when confirmed on Tuesday (4/7/2023).

According to him, holding regular matches will revive professional boxing and discover new talents. Otherwise, he said, it would be very difficult to score a world champion. “There will be another boxing torpor in Indonesia,” said Chris John.

He also did not hesitate to hope that BUMN Minister Erick Thohir, who is also a sports figure and is now General Chair of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) to intervene, in this case helping the world of professional boxing in Indonesia.

“I think yes, hopefully there is a way, maybe if it’s private, it’s difficult, yes, like it or not, the government does, maybe to Pak Erick Thohir later,” said Chris John.

He admitted that he chose to ask Erick for help to show that boxing is a branch of martial arts that can produce world champions. “And that means we have enormous prospects for Indonesian boxers to make achievements,” he said.
