Defeat Defending Champion, Ons Jabeur Challenges Sabalenka in the Wimbledon Semifinals

– Tunisian tennis player Ons Jabeur defeated defending champion Elena Rybakina and will meet Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals of Wimbledon 2023, Wednesday (12/7/2023).

Jabeur won the semifinal ticket after stopping Rybakina, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, and 6-1. Meanwhile, Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the top four after defeating Madison Keys from the United States, 6-2, 6-4.

In the other semifinal match, Elina Svitolina will face Czech tennis player, Marketa Vondrousova. Svitolina qualified after defeating Iga Switek in the quarter-finals, 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2. Her potential opponent, Vondrousova advanced to the next round after defeating American tennis player, Jessica Pegula, 6-4, 2-6, and 6-4.

Jabeur avenged last year’s Wimbledon final defeat with victory over Elena Rybakina on Wednesday, which allowed her to progress to the last four.

In the 2022 title rematch, as the sixth seed, Jabeur defeated the third-ranked opponent on Center Court.

The 28-year-old tennis player will face Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus, who is the second seed, to fight for a place in the final which will be held at the All England Club, Saturday (15/7/2023).

“My performance is very satisfying. There are a lot of emotions involved, especially when playing against someone who has a very good serve,” said Jabeur, as reported by AFP on Wednesday.

“I feel frustrated but happy that I was able to recover. I expressed all emotions, from anger to calm and focus, and I hope to control my emotions like this in the next two matches.”

Rybakina started by securing break point in the fourth game of the first set when hitting backhand Jabeur went wide, but Jabeur immediately countered.

Jabeur took advantage of Rybakina’s mistake at the net and took a 6-5 lead.

However, this time Jabeur was unable to hold on to his lead and missed one set pointso Rybakina forced the match to continue to tie-break which he won.

In the deciding set, Jabeur showed his strength by opening up a 3-0 lead, and then saved two break point to take a 4-1 lead.

Jabeur managed to get break with a punch backhand and managed to hold her serve to seal the victory.
