Japan Open 2023: Gregoria Advances, Praveen/Melati Eliminates

The women’s singles, Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, advanced to the last 16, while the mixed doubles Praveen Jordan/Melati Daeva Oktavianti were eliminated.

Gregoria advanced to the second round after defeating the Thai representative, Pornpawee Chochuwong, 21-19, 18-21, and 21-18. This seventh seed escaped after defeating Chochuwong in 1 hour and 13 minutes.

In the round of 16, Gregoria will face Sung Shuo Yun from Taiwan. Sung escaped after defeating compatriot Pai Yu Po, 14-21, 21-17, 21-18.

In the previous match, the Praveen/Melati mixed doubles failed to win a ticket to the last 16 after surrendering to the third seeds from Japan, Yuta Watanabe/Arisa Higashino, 13-21, 8-21. Praveen/Melati gave up after 30 minutes of fighting.

After the match, Gregoria admitted that in this fight she was more prepared to face Pornpawee. “I don’t want to miss out because the previous defeat was at the 2023 Swiss Open and his record is often negligent in the final points,” said the Wonogiri-born player.

According to the 23-year-old player, in the second game he should have been able to focus more so that the game would not be overturned rubber game. However, in the second game he gave up 18-21. In the third game, said Gregoria, she tried her best not to make any mistakes.
