Jonathan/Priscilla Advances to Top 16 of AJC Tournament

Mixed doubles Jonathan Farell Gosal/Priskila Venus Elsadai advanced to the last 16 of the 2023 BNI Badminton Asia Junior Championships after defeating the Thai pair, Weerapong Roonjattu/Sabrina Sophita Wedler 21-14, 21-15.

The first round of the Badminton Asia Junior Championships (AJC) 2023 tournament was held at the Amongraga Sports Hall, Yogyakarta, on Wednesday (13/7/2023). Jonathan/Priscilla admit that they are still adapting to the windy field conditions.

“Both of us communicate with each other on the court so we don’t get tense. Today’s field conditions are very different because there is a lot of wind blowing. We need to strategize with each other,” Jonathan said after appearing in the inaugural match of the 2023 Badminton Asia Junior Championships (AJC).

With this victory, Jonathan Farell Gosal/Priskila Venus Elsadai advanced to the round of 16 and will face the winner between Daigo Tanioka/Maya Taguchi (Japan) and Lee Jong Min/Park Seul (Korea).

In the men’s doubles sector, Muhammad Hafizh Deedat Baryadi/Calvin Valentino Sifen Tan also made it to the last 32 of the 2023 BNI Badminton Asia Junior Championships tournament. Hafizh/Calvin progressed to the next round after defeating the Bangladeshi pair, Shahed Ahmed/Shopu Naim Uddin, by score 21-11, 21-8.

“We see this match as an opportunity to adapt to the playing field. We have previously tried the field and this is very important for the preparation for the next round,” said Hafizh.

With this victory, Muhammad Hafizh Deedat Baryadi/Calvin Valentino Sifen Tan will face the Chinese pair, Xu Hua Yu/Zhang Le Jian, in the round of 32. The Chinese pair eased into the next round after receiving a bye in the round of 64.

“When playing against the Chinese pair, we have to play quickly. We will try not to attack too much from the back and prefer direct attacks,” said Calvin.
