Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez happy to be back wearing the number 9 shirt

– Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez is thrilled after his shirt number changed from 27 to 9.

The number 9 is very familiar to the Uruguayan striker having used it during his brilliant spells for Benfica.

In that time, Nunez scored 48 goals and gave 16 assists in 85 appearances for the club nicknamed As Aguias, as reported by Transfermarkt.

“I am very happy to wear number nine. I also feel proud,” said Nunez as quoted from Liverpool’s official website, Thursday (13/7/2023).

Nunez took the number 9 after his previous number, Roberto Firmino, moved to club Al Ahli in Saudi Arabia.

Initially, Firmino came to Liverpool with the jersey number 11. However, since the arrival of Mohamed Salah in the 2017/2018 season, the Brazilian striker switched to number 9 and since then scored 88 goals and provided 57 assists.

“To be honest, previous players have represented this number very well, and now it’s my turn to wear it,” continued Nunez.

Join The Reds in the 2022/2023 season, Nunez initially chose number 27, which was previously worn by Divock Origi before moving to AC Milan.

While using this number, the 24-year-old player scored 15 goals and gave four assists in 44 appearances in all competitions.

Furthermore, the player who was born on June 24, 1999 hopes to continue in the footsteps of great players who previously wore number 9 at Liverpool, such as Firmino, Robbie Fowler and Ian Rush.

“I hope to represent this number in the best way as the previous players did. May this last many years and bring a lot of joy,” said Nunez.
