Meta Was Fined IDR 19.3 Trillion For Transferring European User Data to America

Liputan6.com, Jakarta – Facebook’s parent company, Meta, was fined USD 1.3 billion or equivalent to Rp. 19.3 trillion from the European Union’s data regulator. The reason is, Meta is considered to have violated European personal data protection rules, GDPR.

To quote Gizchina, Tuesday (23/5/2023), the fine with this amount was the largest fine given to a company, under GDPR rules.

Meta was sanctioned with a fine of IDR 19.3 trillion because the company continued to transfer data outside the 2020 European Union court ruling which invalidated the validity of the EU and US data transfer pact.

The European personal data protection agency, DPC, which is the EU’s main regulator for Meta, said the fine was imposed because Meta did not take adequate steps to protect the privacy of European users’ data when it was transferred to the United States.

The DPC said Meta failed to ensure that US law provided adequate protection for European users’ data. In addition, Meta does not provide sufficient information to users in EU countries about how their data is being used.

Meta Facebook said, will appeal against the fine imposed. But this decision was a major setback for the company. This is because the GDPR is one of the strictest data privacy laws in the world and has been used to target a number of other technology companies, including Google and Amazon.
